How To Have A More Holistic Workout Routine

Too many people fixate on a particular type of workout to the exclusion of all else. Yet, that is not the way to develop total fitness or to maximally prepare your body for the challenges of everyday life. Whether it’s weight training, running or doing HIIT, just doing one type of workout will prevent you from reaching your true fitness potential. In this article, we present a workable routine that provides a more well-rounded holistic workout routine.

What Should You Include in Your Routine?
A well-rounded fitness program should include:

  • Aerobic Exercise

  • Strength Training

  • Core Exercises

  • Balance Training

  • Stretching

Ideally, all of these aspects of fitness should be included in your weekly schedule. You should aim to get 2 or 3 strength training sessions per week, along with the same number of aerobic sessions. Core, balance and stretching can be incorporated into a range of types of aerobic or cardio workouts.

Our club has a whole range of holistic workout options available all under one roof, that you might not have used. So, rather than making a beeline for the workout floor every time you hit the gym, being a little adventurous and experimenting with the various classes and other workout options will help you to cover all of your fitness bases.

Here are some exercise options that will help you to broaden your fitness horizons and develop your total fitness:

Yoga
Yoga is well known for its ability to help relieve stress, unwind and calm the body physically. But it does much more than that. Regular practice of yoga will reduce inflammation, improve heart health, improve sleep quality and enhance flexibility and balance. Many yoga classes also include breathing exercises, which promote respiratory health as they help to reduce anxiety.

Pilates
Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates as a way to achieve total control over his body. Since then it has become a hugely popular exercise option around the world. Every Pilates exercise is built around the following 8 precepts:

  • Concentration

  • Relaxation

  • Alignment

  • Breathing

  • Centring

  • Coordination

  • Flowing movements

  • Stamina

Pilates can either be done with just your bodyweight or with a device called a Pilates Reformer. It involves a platform that moves along a track and that is connected to springs that increase the intensity of the workout. You make use of leverage, bodyweight positioning, ergonomics and spring resistance in order to move your body through a full range of motion.

Here are some benefits you can expect from pilates:

  • Deep muscle activation

  • Calms the mind

  • Improve strength and endurance

  • Strengthens the core

  • Improves the posture

  • Enhances flexibility

  • Helps with weight loss

Spin Classes
A spin class will have you pumping your legs on a fancy exercise bike to upbeat music and the encouragement of a fitness leader. It will provide you with a pretty intense aerobic workout. The pay-off? You will boost your fat-burning ability, churning through between 700 and 900 calories in a 45 minute session. Spin training also provides a challenging workout for the muscles of your entire body. You’ll get a great pump in your quads, glutes, hamstrings and calves. But the constant position changes will also work your shoulders, arms, forearms and upper back. Your cardio endurance will also be boosted with spin training.

HIIT
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves performing repeated bouts of sharp, short exercise interspersed with even shorter recovery periods. For example, one popular form of HIIT involves sprinting for 20 seconds and then resting for 10 seconds. You repeat this sequence for 8 rounds. This can be done with a whole range of exercises, including the treadmill, rowing machine or cycle.

Barre
Barre is a form of group exercise that involves performing a series of exercises with the aid of a ballet barre. Elements of yoga and pilates may be incorporated as well as resistance bands, yoga straps and exercise balls.

Barre exercise helps to develop lean muscle tone, improve flexibility, promote flexibility and balance, boost endurance and promote weight loss and muscle definition.
