Why Veganism is Becoming the Fastest Growing Trend

It wasn’t that long ago that vegetarians were seen as weirdos. They were part of tiny sub-culture that was associated with the hippie revolution, epitomised by long hair, scraggly beards, and tie-died t-shirts. But that was then.

Nowadays, veganism has gone mainstream. Millions of people the world over have ditched the beef in favour of black beans and chickpeas.

So, what happened? In a word, the internet happened. The social media world has allowed what were quiet, inconsequential voices to develop a solid platform to promote their ideas. The vegan community has had a very vocal active internet presence from the very start. It’s interesting to note that the worldwide boom in veganism has run parallel with the rise of the most powerful social media platform of our time - Instagram.

Instagram, with its visual focus, proved to be the perfect medium for vegans to share their passions and their recipes. Images of sumptuous recipes interspersed with animal cruelty messages have the power to impact people’s thoughts and emotions. It also allowed vegans to address the many misconceptions surrounding the subject.

Instagram has become the world’s new inspiration for kitchen innovation. And vegan recipes have established themselves as the most popular, and most trending, type of recipes to experiment with.

Of course, as the buzz about veganism has grown, there has been a litany of supporting media to capitalise on its popularity. A very popular Netflix documentary called ‘The Game Changers’ gave many people the extra nudge, especially gym-goers who may have been concerned about lack of protein intake,  they needed to give the whole vegan thing a try.

Social media and the momentum that builds around it can only go so far. If veganism didn’t posses some serious positives, it wouldn’t have become as popular as it has. So, what does this lifestyle choice offer that so many people are finding so appealing?

Vegan Benefits

A lot of people lose weight straight away by switching to vegan because they are not eating animal foods and processed foods.  Plant foods are healthier than animal foods because they don’t have any cholesterol and have lower amounts of saturated fats. Plant foods also don’t create so much inflammation in your body. However, you can still gain muscular bodyweight weight when you switch to vegan.

The secret to the vegan weight loss is to eat foods that are nutrient-dense. These are foods like non-starchy vegetables, fruit, legumes such as beans, lentils, and nuts. You should also eat whole, healthy fats.

Many people feel that there is no way that they can possibly exist without meat in their lives. However, the vegan option offers a world of delicious plant-based foods, a plethora of sumptuous recipes and food combinations that will tempt your taste buds. In recent years more options and vegan substitutes have entered the market, making it even easier to maintain a balanced diet, including the illusive B12 vitamin, previously thought to have only been available via animal produce.

Will the Trend Continue

There are no signs of the worldwide trend toward veganism slowing down. It’s association with climate control, sustainability, humanity to animals and overall health will see more and more people making the switch in the months and years to come.

So, where do you stand on veganism? Have you been tempted to ditch your chicken and steak in favour of plant-based alternatives? And, if so, how has it affected you in terms of energy and overall well-being. We’d love to know your thoughts!
