5 Yoga Poses to Awaken Your Body and Mind

People have been practicing yoga for centuries, it’s proven the test of time because it has an incredible ability to enhance a person's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It is an excellent way to awaken the body and mind, promoting strength, flexibility, and relaxation. If you want to incorporate yoga into your fitness routine, here are five yoga poses to help tone your body whilst also giving yourself time in the day to free your mind and practice mindfulness.

Sun Salutation

Whilst Sun Salutation is a sequence and not a single pose we’re going to include it none the less, because when these 12 yoga poses are performed in a flowing motion and is perfect for waking up the body in the morning, improving your circulation, and preparing you for your day.

Tree Pose

Tree Pose is a balancing posture that helps improve concentration, focus, and coordination. It will strengthen your legs, hips, and core muscles and stretch your spine, shoulders, and chest. To perform the pose, stand with your feet hip-width apart, lift one foot, and place the sole of your foot against the inner thigh of the other leg. Bring your hands to your heart, and hold the pose for a few breaths before switching sides.

Warrior pose

Warrior pose and warrior II in particular is a standing pose that also promotes strength and balance, but also endurance. It will open up your chest and shoulders. To perform the pose, stand with your feet wide apart, turn your right foot out to 90 degrees, and bend your right knee. Keep your left leg straight, and extend your arms out to the sides, palms facing down. Hold the pose for a few breaths before switching sides.

Bridge Pose

Bridge Pose is a backbend that will also open up the chest and shoulders, stretch the spine, but also focus the strengthening to your legs and glutes. To perform the pose, lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Lift your hips up towards the ceiling, and clasp your hands together underneath your back. Hold the pose for a few breaths before lowering your hips back down.

Child's Pose

Child's Pose is a restorative pose and will go a long way to calm your mind and relax your body. It will stretch your hips, thighs, and ankles and helps relieve stress and tension. To perform the pose, kneel on the ground with your big toes touching and sit back on your heels. Fold your body forward, resting your forehead on the ground and your arms alongside your body. Hold the pose for a few breaths, focusing on your breath and releasing any tension.
